INTRODUCTION TO UV COATING

1. Introduction to UV coating

The coating is made up of cross-links under the action of UV rays to form a paint film. The process of film-forming occurs quickly at room temperature, suitable for applications on heat-sensitive materials such as wood, plastic, paper, etc. UV paint minimizes the emission of volatile organic compounds. vapors (VOCs) thereby providing health safety and minimizing fire and explosion problems caused by the high use of organic solvents.

Most UV coatings have an Acrylate-based resin component that binds through free radical polymerization. UV paints usually contain a mixture of prepolymer/oligomers/monomers, photochemical absorbers (free radical reactive colorants), pigments, some additives, and a small number of solvents.

2. Advantages and disadvantages of UV coating

Advantages:

Paint spraying saves time and labor compared to traditional manual paint spraying.

The paint dries quickly due to the automatic UV dryers, the process is not affected by the weather and can be packed right at the end of the process line.

The automatic programmed machine system can monitor the system remotely, helping to detect problems in time, and is easy to control the operation.

Improve product quality: automation reduces human mistakes.

Reduce operating costs: the application of automation machines reduces the number of workers required in the production process, hence, reduces employment costs.

Disadvantages

  • High price
  • Requires investment in machinery and equipment
  • The market is narrow

UV paint can only be dried with the appropriate intensity of UV light, so the wasted paint that is released into the environment will not dry and become toxic since it can penetrate the skin, go deep into the body, and also pollute the environment.

Currently, Mega Chemical Vietnam has been widely developing a set of raw materials for UV paint, anti-rust primers, oil paints, etc. Resin sources are imported from Elegant, Qualimer, Eternal. Moreover, Mega is developing some products such as zinc powder, zinc oxide, acrylic resin, and high-grade epoxy resin from Korea, the USA, Thai.
