INTRODUCTION TO ALKYD RESIN

Alkyd resin is a low molecular weight Ester, formed when polymeric alcohols react with mono- or polymeric acids.

An alkyd is a polyester modified by the addition of fatty acids and other components. Alkyds are derived from polyols and a dicarboxylic acid or carboxylic acid anhydride. The inclusion of the fatty acid confers a tendency to form a flexible coating.

Alkyds are used in paints and in molds for casting. They are the dominant resin or "binder" in most commercial "oil-based" coatings. Approximately 200,000 tons of alkyd resins are produced each year. The original alkyds were compounds of glycerol and phthalic acid sold under the name Glyptal. These were sold as substitutes for the darker-colored copal resins, thus creating alkyd varnishes that were much paler in color. From these, the alkyds that are known today were developed.

Classification of alkyd resins

There are 3 ways to classify Alkyd resins that users need to know to choose suitable for making Alkyd paint, as follows:

1. Classified as multi-functional alcohol and acid (or Anhydride) multi-function using Alkyd resin

There are 2 main types of plastic are:

- GLYPHTAL resin: use Glycerol and Phthalic Anhydride. Glyphtal resin has very good solubility in solvents but creates a soft film that is less water-resistant.

- PENTAPHTALIC resin: used in Pentaerythriol and Phthalic Anhydride, PentaPhtalic resin has dry properties to create a hard, light-resistant paint film.

2. There are 3 types classified according to the percentage of fatty oils in Alkyd resin

- SHORT-OIL ALKYD (SHORT-OIL ALKYD) has 30-45% fatty oils (or fatty acids). Lean alkyd is divided into drying type and non-drying type, which are used differently in the paint industry.

- Medium Alkyd resin (MEDIUM-OIL ALKYDS) with 46-55% fatty oils (or fatty acids) is the type of Alkyd with the most applications in alkyd resins.

- Alkyd resin (LONG-OIL ALKYD) containing 56-70% fatty oils (or fatty acids) is often used as a topcoat for decorative metal, wood, etc. durable to rainy weather. Alkyd oil paint is a key ingredient in architectural building systems.

3. Classification according to types of fatty oils, fatty acids, or other denatured substances, consisting of mainly

- Modified Alkyd with dry fatty oils, semi-dry fatty oils with 3 pairs for the production of medium Alkyd resins, dry skinny Alkyd resins are used as quick-drying primers and primers (e.g. flax oil, oil oil, rubber seed oil, etc.)

- Alkyd modified from semi-dry fatty oils with 2 double pairs to produce fatty Alkyd resins using decorative paints with less yellowing (discolored) paint film in the atmosphere (eg soybean oil, ...)

- Alkyd modified from fatty oils is dehydrated castor oil with 2 double bonds, or from synthetic fatty acids to produce non-dry thin Alkyd resins used in combination with some other film-forming resins for drying paints, paints NC wood, etc. has higher quality than plain Alkyd paint.

- Alkyd modified from fatty oils together with resin to produce Alkyd Glyphtal and Pentaphtalic resins for oil paints and drying paints Alkyd, Amino, etc.

Based on the aforementioned three Alkyd resins classification methods, paint manufacturers can combine to choose the Alkyd type suitable for their Alkyd paint production purpose.

We hope that the above knowledge will help you to better understand these resin products.
