MATERIALS FOR INTUMESCENT PAINT
1. Introduction
Intumescent coatings often referred to as intumescent paint, are used in buildings as a passive fire resistance measure. They can be applied to structural members as an aesthetically pleasing fireproofing product. Another type of intumescent product is a fire-stopping pillow or putty that is used to protect openings from fire.
The key feature of intumescents is that they expand significantly when exposed to high temperatures, such as those found in a fire. Some intumescent products can expand to more than 100-times the original thickness. As the product expands it becomes much less dense, which makes it act as an insulator that keeps the high temperatures away from structural members or protected openings.

Intumescent paint is composed of 5 main components:
- Film-forming agent (plastic), titanium, and set of 3 materials APP (Ammonium polyphosphate), Penta (Pentarythol), and Melamine.
- The resin for Megavietnam's fireproof paint is a solvent-based acrylic resin with good compatibility with a set of 3 fire retardant additives, quick-drying, ensuring easy construction, and anti-sagging.
- APP (Ammonium polyphosphate) is the acid donor "Acid donor". The APP used for blistering fireproof paint is the phase II APP with a large molecular length (n>1000), which begins to decompose at a temperature of 300, this characteristic is very different from the phase I APP with a molecular length low molecular weight (n<100) and usually decomposes at temperatures from 150.
- Penta (Pentarythol) is a carbon donor "Carbon donor". Different from other applications, Penta in the production of blistering fireproof coatings is a crushed Penta type. It is mandatory that the Penta content must be above 95% and the average size (D50) needs to reach 45 micros.
- Melamine is a "blowing agent" foaming agent. Melamine suitable for flame retardant application is Melamine which has good compatibility with APP and Penta above to form a complete set of 3 blister flame retardant additives.

2. Features of Intumescent paint
- Very easy to use, safe, uncomplicated.
- Quick and easy construction time. No additional costs incurred
- Can be painted directly on iron (For absolute effectiveness, it is recommended to paint a primer against rust)
- Can be used both indoors and outdoors.
- Withstand temperatures up to 1000°C and time up to 3 hours.
- High aesthetics.
- Paint can resist fire for 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 120 minutes, 150 minutes, 180 minutes depending on the fire protection needs of each project.
From the above advantages, it can be seen that using fireproof paint for indoor and outdoor structures of manufacturing plants and factories is a solution that should be applied to all factories and construction work today.
