 PAINT ADDITIVES IN COATING PRODUCTION

In addition to the 3 main components of paint: film-forming agents, solvents, and pigments, paint also contains several other materials with a very small percentage (usually 1%) called paint additives. These additives have a positive effect on the paint film quality.

Additives in paints are often difficult to determine the chemical composition such as film-forming agents, solvents, pigments, so they are often classified according to their functions. For example, anti-foaming, dispersing pigment-wetting valve, anti-settling, anti-wrinkle, anti-UV, anti-moss, anti-rot, etc.

Additives are often classified into the following groups:

1. Common additives commonly used in most paints are:

  • Defoamer: defoaming big foam in production) Deaerator: defoaming small foam in application
  • Rheology
  • Surfactant (Surfactant)
  • Wetting & Dispersing Agents

2. Specialized additives for certain paints on request, for example:

  • Additives to enhance anti-corrosion for pigments
  • anti-settling agent - Anti-staining agent
  • Anti-wrinkle agent for Liquid paint
  • Anti-corrosion and anti-rot agent in paint packaging
  • Anti-moss agent
  • Other special additives….

Below we would like to share information about some types of additives:

1. Defoamer

Defoamer and Deaerator are known as defoamers. It is difficult to accurately determine the effectiveness of Defoamer or Deaerator. The nature of the wet foam generated during the paint manufacturing process is macro-foam which commonly appears in the production of water-based paints and inks. And dry foam appears during the paint application by brush and roller is a microfoam.

Both Macro and Micro foams seriously affect the quality of the paint film due to orange peel roughness, convexity, nail holes on the dry paint surface. Defoamer is used for macrofoam. Deaerator is used to defrost the microfoam Defoamer and Deaerator are mainly added to the paint during the grinding process and are indispensable ingredients when formulating paint.

2. Surface additives

Usually, the surface of the paint film during and after the application has many defects that are detrimental to the decorative and protective paint quality. Those defects are:

- Bad permeability

- Convex holes.

- Uneven patchy staining (Benard honeycomb structure).

- Orange peel roughness.

- Sensitive to dust, paint film, etc.

The reasons for paint surface defects is the different surface tension of the different raw materials in the paint (mainly the solvent volatility or the curing reaction of the paint). 2 components A/B) or due to paint application factors such as excessive spraying, airborne dust particles, unclean paint surface, etc.

To prevent defects caused by surface tension, surfactant additives which are Polysiloxane-based or Polyacrylate-based additives must be used.

3. Wetting and dispersing additive

The distribution of solid pigment particles in the paint film-forming is the most important factor in the paint manufacturing process. The pigment dispersion process in the production of color paints is divided into 3 different stages: wetting, grinding, and stabilization. If this 3-stage process is not performed well, coating defects may occur, which are:

- Coagulation of pigments.

- Reduced gloss.

- Bad color-resistant

- Patchy and color separation

- Benard honeycomb phenomenon

- Paint deposition

- Sagging

- Poor smooth surface
