Binder

The binder is the film-forming component of paint. It is the only component that is always present among all the various types of formulations. Many binders are too thick to be applied and must be thinned. The type of thinner, if present, varies with the binder.

Binders include synthetic or natural resins such as alkyds, acrylics, vinyl-acrylics, vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE), polyurethanes, polyesters, melamine resins, epoxy, silanes or siloxanes, or oils.

The binder is the important film-forming component of paint. The binder used in Alkyd paints is Alkyd resin modified with herbal oils.

Pigments and fillers

Pigments are granular solids incorporated in the paint to contribute color. Dyes are colorants that dissolve in the paint.

Fillers are granular solids incorporated to impart toughness, texture, give the paint special properties, or to reduce the cost of the paint. During production, the size of such particles can be measured with a Hegman gauge. Rather than using only solid particles, some paints contain dyes instead of or in combination with pigments.

Pigments can be classified as either natural or synthetic. Natural pigments include various clays, calcium carbonate, mica, silicas, and talcs. Synthetics would include engineered molecules, calcined clays, blanc fixe, precipitated calcium carbonate, and synthetic pyrogenic silicas.

The ability to color the pigment is most important and that is due to the selective absorption of light. This absorption depends on the chemical makeup, size, crystal structure, and the special nature of each pigment. Pigments with a relatively high refractive index of 1.65 - 2.7 are called coating pigments, while those with a lower refractive index of 1.45 - 1.65 are called fillers. Pigments and fillers vary greatly in their dispersibility in the painted medium. This ability depends on the size, shape, and hardness of the seed.

Solvent

The solvent is added to paints is to dissolve the polymer and adjust the viscosity of the paint. It is volatile and does not become part of the paint film. It also controls flow and application properties, and in some cases can affect the stability of the paint while in a liquid state.

We need to pay attention to the following factors when using a solvent

  • Solvent solubility.
  • Economical.
  • The effect to mechanical properties of the paint film

Solvents are often used in large amounts, affecting the cost of the paint. Therefore, to save costs, a cheaper solvent called diluents can be used to replace solvent.

The diluent will only dissolve the binder when used with the active solvent. Therefore, when using diluent solvents, take notice of the ratio between the diluting solvent and the active solvent. This selection also affects the paint film quality, not just the solubility.

Solvents have two important properties

  • The solubility
  • The evaporation rate

Additives

Besides the three main categories of ingredients, paint can have a wide variety of miscellaneous additives, which are usually added in small amounts, yet provide a significant effect on the product. Some benefits of additives are:

  • increase wet edge, improve flow properties,
  • improve the finished appearance, improve UV stability

In order to create a good paint film in addition to plastics, pigments, fillers, and solvents, some

In alkyd paint, additives are mainly: desiccant, anti-deposition agent, some single-use dispersant, wetting agent ... as ACNC paint or a scaffold such as PU paint are not necessary for Alkyd paint because the alkyd resin is already flexible which is also used as a plasticizer for other paints. Alkyd paint additives include:

  • Anti-dimming agent
  • anti-settling agent
  • Pigment wetting and dispersing agents
  • Drying agent

At present, Mega Vietnam Chemical Co., Ltd. provides a full range of raw materials to produce Alkyd paint.
