FIRE-RESISTANT MORTAR FOR STEEL
Steel is an important material for the construction industry, used as reinforcement in pouring concrete. Steel gives a solid structure with high stability, but when the temperature reaches 550ºC, the steel begins to melt, leading to the structure of the building being broken. Nowadays, with the development of large constructions entirely made of steel, the need for a fireproof solution for steel structures, making them able to withstand a long time in high temperatures gives an opportunity to extinguish the fire or escape. And one of the effective fireproof solutions for steel is using fireproof mortar.
1. What is the fire-resistant mortar
Fireproof mortar is called dry mortar; used commonly in the construction industry. Fire retardant mortar helps protect structures when a fire occurs, ensuring safety for people and construction.
2. Features of fire-resistant mortar
Fire-resistant mortar has a number of outstanding features:
- High heat resistance
- Impact resistance, compression resistance
- No calcification after burning
- Good soundproofing
- The product has good bearing capacity, so while waiting for it to dry, there is no need to use copha.
- Fireproof mortar does not contain harmful substances.
- Simple and convenient to use
- Stability quality

3. Classification of fireproof mortar
There are two types of fire retardant commonly used today:
- Type 1: Conventional fire resistance. This is a pre-delivered one-component system from core sites sourced to produce natural, cement, and computationally active additives, designed to be applied by spray coating. on fire. Protects the combined metal of oil and gas, high-rise buildings, and other structures from deforming or losing their ability to withstand firing and maintaining worker safety.
Advantages: This material is very easy to construct and maintain and repair in different weather conditions. This type of mortar, after being applied, will create a solid coating like stone, capable of withstanding the thermal impact of high-intensity fuel fires, especially flame spray.
- Type 2: Insulated fireproof mortar. This is a superior grade and is an insulating lightweight fire retardant mortar designed for spray protection of metal structures for offshore rigs, ships, and structures requiring high fire resistance standards and lightweight. This is a one-component material system that is pre-mixed from heat-treated, heat-resistant lightweight aggregates, thermal insulation minerals derived from self-heating, heat-resistant cement, and active and adjustable additives.
Advantages: With this material system, when construction is completed, it also creates a solid coating like stone, capable of withstanding the thermal impact of high-intensity fuel fires, especially in the form of a flame spray.
4. Construction of fireproof mortar for steel
Depending on the type of mortar and depending on the construction works, there are different methods of construction of fireproof mortar for steel:
- Apply by wet spray method
- Apply by injection pump or hand plastering
