1. General information

Normally, the surface of the paint film during and after the application has many defects that are detrimental to the decorative and protective paint quality of the paint. Those defects are:

  • Poor wettability to painted surfaces.
  • Create convex holes.
  • Uneven patchy staining (Benard’s cell honeycomb structure).
  • Not spreading well, create orange roughness.
  • Sensitive to dust that blurs paint film, etc.

The main cause of the above paint surface defects is due to the different surface tension of the different raw materials contained in the paint (mainly the volatility of the solvent or the curing reaction of the 2-components-A/B paint) or due to paint application factors such as too strong spray, dust particles in the air, unclean paint surface, etc.

To prevent surface tension defects, we should use surfactant additives.

2. Properties

Surfactant additives can stabilize foam in several applications, with the main effect of giving a dry paint film a nice appearance (smooth, flat, even color, etc.).

For systems that are particularly sensitive to foam such as construction epoxy, polyurethanes, and those applied by air spraying, the surfactant additive has defoaming properties.

 3. Application

Surfactant additives are used in the production of NC paints, acid curing, polyurethane solvent-based wood coatings, UV curing coatings, and acrylic and NC thermoplastics.
