RECYCLED PLASTIC PRICE STRONGLY INCREASING

According to ICIS data, compared with January 2021, the cost of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic pieces in Europe has increased by 103% to 1,690 euros/ton... This plastic will be used by manufacturers of household goods, food, beverage and apparel for recycling.

ICIS also said that the price of used bottles and jars baled for the production of plastic scraps even more than tripled compared to the same period last year. The price of recycled plastic in the US has also skyrocketed.

Last week, the price of recycled PET plastic has surpassed the price of newly produced PET plastic, as market demand for used products outweighed the increase in the price of fossil raw materials for manufacturing. completely new plastic production.

More and more beverage manufacturers are paying attention to single-use plastics, especially since David Attenborough released the documentary Blue Planet II in 2017. The film has been watched by millions of people. see the harmful effects of plastic pollution on the environment. The bottles of these companies are also the main raw materials for recycled PET plastic.

Corporations such as Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nestlé, Keurig Dr Pepper and Danone are all aiming to use at least 25% recycled materials in the production of their product packaging by 2025 to meet requirements EU demand. Some companies aim much higher.

ICIS senior plastic recycling analyst, Helen McGeough, said limited supply and high prices are slowing companies' progress towards their goals. "Projects are continuing and increased use of recycled plastic has slowed. That's what our suppliers have told us."

Sue Garrard, a sustainability consultant, said: "The supply of recycled PET is not keeping up with demand because the industry has not been able to scale in time, even though companies are sending strong buy signals".

Last month, three industry groups that make non-alcoholic beverages called on the European Commission (EC) to give them priority access to recycled bottles before other sectors, such as clothing.

Nestlé - the company that makes bottled water brands (including the Perrier brand) - said: "If beverage manufacturers had priority access to recycled materials, we could have increased our revenue. content of recycled materials in the packaging of the next product life cycle, only then will our product be able to circulate in the market."

Trade group UNESDA Soft Drinks Europe said: "Without the appropriate regulatory mechanisms, the industry will face many difficulties in the process of achieving the target."

PepsiCo's chief sustainability officer Jim Andrews said the company is stepping up its goal of using 100% recycled plastic to produce "key Pepsi-branded products" in 11 European markets. .

He said: "We are striving to achieve our goal: By 2025, 100% of our product packaging can be recycled, compostable or reused. And clearly. It is clear that recovery and increased recycling of PET plastic requires an appropriate regulatory framework and improved infrastructure."

PepsiCo says its subsidiary SodaStream is a business model that uses reusable containers. This is a product that is recommended by environmental protection organizations because it can solve the problem of packaging waste and emissions better than ordinary products.

In Europe, several countries are planning to implement packaging refund programs if customers return used plastic bottles to the company. Meanwhile, some countries such as Germany have been implementing this program. Some countries, including the UK, are also demanding increased accountability from manufacturers, forcing companies to invest more in recycling services including waste disposal. envelope.

But Garrard warns that these plans will have limitations because the sector has narrow profit margins. “The question is, are the rules of the circular economy (in this economic model, design, manufacturing, and service activities all have to ensure the goal of prolonging the life of the material),” she said. quality, and eliminate negative impacts on the environment) will be effective because we are trying to solve the problem of packaging, and there are many types of packaging that are inherently suitable for the market has a large number of products and low-profit margins."
