APPLICATION OF SILICA IN RUBBER PRODUCTION
1. General introduction of silica
Silica (SiO2) is another name for silicon dioxide (white smoke, precipitated silica, white coal, silica filler). Silica exists in both crystalline and amorphous forms.
In nature, silica mainly exists in a crystalline or microcrystalline form (quartz, tridymite, cristobalite, chalcedonies, agate). Which, most of the synthetic (artificial) silica is made in powdered form or colloidal form and has an amorphous structure (silica colloidal).
Several crystalline forms of silica can be produced at high pressure and high temperatures like coesite and stishovite.
People often based on crystalline and amorphous structures to distinguish between natural silica and synthetic silica. In addition, they also have a difference in the shape of coarse and fine particles.
The particle size is assessed by the surface area criterion. The larger the surface area value, the higher the reinforcement level. A group of synthetic silica with a basic particle size of less than 40 nm is used as a reinforcing filler for rubber having the effect of increasing wear resistance, tensile strength and tear strength. With a particle size larger than 40nm, it is used as a common filler to increase surface smoothness during the process of rolling, pressing and extrusion.
2. Application of silica in rubber production
a. Silica for tires
The silica used has high precipitation and dispersibility. It is used in producing tires to improve tire efficiency. This application has many advantages including:
- Reducing tire tension, resulting in lower fuel consumption, improving resistance to stretching.
- Used as a processing powder, strengthening the physical and mechanical properties of elastomers, especially in the ability to increase the hardness of rubber.
- Resulting in high tensile strength, tear-resistance and high abrasion resistance for the composite.
- Reducing production costs by replacing carbon black with precipitated silica

b. Silica for industrial rubber/footwear
Precipitated silica has high strength properties and good wear resistance. It is mainly used in shoe soles, rubber tubes, and other rubber industries.
c. Silica for silicone rubber
Because precipitated silica has high purity and transparency, low iron content, anti-yellowing, enhanced anti-corrosion properties, etc, it is suitable for the silicone rubber industry. The addition of silica will effectively improve the tensile strength and vulcanization of silicone rubber.
