BLOWING AGENT FOR RUBBER AND PLASTIC
A blowing agent is a substance that is capable of producing a cellular structure via a foaming process in a variety of materials that undergo hardening or phase transition. Normally blowing agents are insoluble in polymers but undergo thermal decomposition or chemical reactions, providing gaseous products.
Important properties of blowing agents
- Their decomposition temperature must be consistent with that of the plastic producing process (150-250°C).
- Gas should be generated at high efficiency (100 - 225 ml/g), non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-corrosive.
- Solid decomposition products do not affect the machining process.
- Small particle size, narrow particle size distribution, and easy to disperse in the polymer
AC blowing agent
AC Blowing agent ( Azodicarbonamide)
Azodicarbonamide is a yellow chemical compound with a specific gravity of 1.65. It is slightly soluble in water and common solvents such as Benzene and Acetone.
Azodicarbonamide has decomposition temperature at 200°C, the gas volume is 220 ml / g, gas obtained consists of N2, CO (ratio of about 2: 1), and a small amount of NH3, CO2 gas. The decomposition temperature can be reduced as low as 155°C when using accelerators such as urea, zinc oxide, lead carbonate, lead phosphate, lead stearate, and glycols.
Application of Azodicarbonamide
- Natural rubber
- Synthetic rubber,
- styrene-butadiene rubber
- neoprene
- butyl rubber
- Polyvinyl Clorua
- EVA plastic
With this blowing agent, the foam rubber will have smooth and small holes. Although AC is yellow, it can be used for white or light-colored rubber. This substance does not affect the curing process but when mixed. Take notice to not let the temperature exceed 140°C.
Preserve Azodicarbonamide by storing it away from sunlight and other sources of heat.
The amount used is about 3-30%.
