CURING AGENTS: TDI AND HDI
In the paint industry in general and wood paint in particular, two main types of hardeners (hardeners) are commonly used or misunderstood as TDI and HDI. However, TDI or HDI is a highly reactive chemical with a high evaporation rate, and also seriously affects human respiratory ability.
1. Formation of TDI and HDI
+ TDI: TDI reacts with trimethylolpropane alcohol. Three TDI molecules are combined with one molecule of the trifunctional alcohol. The resulting conjugate product is a high-molecular-weight substance containing three reactive isocyanate groups => "Adduct from TDI"
+ HDI: HDI is not used in simple molecular form but is made into higher molecular weight by reacting diisocyanate with water => "Biuret from HDI"
2. Applications
+ TDI: The product synthesized from TDI is easy to react, creates a film with high hardness, good solvent, and chemical resistance, and is the relatively cheap price. However, under the influence of weather, the film turns yellow, becomes brittle, and eventually decomposes. Therefore, this product is often used for primers, chemical-resistant wood paints, paints for furniture, etc.
+ HDI: Products come from HDI, for flexibility, weather resistance, and good chemical resistance, often less prone to yellowing. But the hardness and drying time are less than Addduct from TDI. Often used for exterior paint, anti-yellowing paint, need weather resistance, etc.
