DIOCTYL ADIPATE (DOA)

Introduction

Dioctyl adipate (DOA) is an organic compound that is used as a plasticizer for PVC. It is a colorless oily liquid. DOA can be mixed with other plasticizers such as  DOP or DOTP. DOA is soluble in oil but insoluble in water. Other names of DOA are bis (2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate and adipic acid di (2-Ethylhexyl) ester.

DOA is used as a plasticizer due to its high flexibility, low temperature, and good electrical properties. It also has good weather resistance and thermal stability. DOA has a variety of applications, it’s more likely used in plastic wrap for food packaging.

Properties of DOA

Dioctyl adipate is an effective plasticizer providing maximum flexibility and stability at low temperatures. Under normal conditions, this compound is a transparent liquid that can be easily mixed with other plasticizers such as DOP and DOTP. It is also compatible with nitrocellulose, ethylcellulose, high butyryl cellulose butyrate, and most neoprene.

The main properties of DOA are:

• Flexibility at low temperatures
• Good electrical properties
• Good weather resistance
• Good thermal stability
• Easy to be mixed with other plasticizers
• Compatible with most rubber materials
• Easy to process.

Application of DOA

Dioctyl adipate is a multi-functional compound with many applications. Here are some of the applications of DOA:

• Plastic wrap for food packaging
• Products made from PVC
• Hydraulic fluid in the capacitor
• The dielectric liquid in the capacitor
• The solvent in the glow stick
• Elastic water pipes
