INTRODUCTION TO SILANE 

 1. What is silane

Silane has the chemical formula RSi(OH)3, is a molecule of one central silicon atom with four attachments. The attachments can be any combination of organic or inorganic groups. Silane is of practical interest as a precursor to elemental silicon. Silane with alkyl groups is an effective water repellent for mineral surfaces such as concrete and masonry. Silanes with both organic and inorganic attachments are used as coupling agents.

Due to this special structure, the active silane binding agent enhances the affinity between organic and inorganic compounds and enhances the physical and chemical properties of the composites such as strength, durability, electrical properties, water resistance, and corrosion resistance.
