 SILICONE HEAT RESISTANT PAINT

1. Definition

Silicon heat-resistant paint is used for decoration and protection of equipment exposed to high temperatures such as ore kiln chimneys, product kilns, industrial equipment, spray towers, dryers. These paints both have a protective effect with anti-rust, anti-moisture, anti-corrosion properties, and high heat resistance. Silicon heat-resistant paint as well as other paints are composed of four main components:

- Pigments, fillers.

- Film former

- Solvent

- Additives

However, pigments, fillers, and film-forming agents must, in addition to the same properties that other paints have, have the ability to be resistant to heat

Some popular heat-resistant paint products are Silicone heat-resistant paint 300°C, Silicone heat-resistant paint 400°C, and Silicone heat-resistant paint 500°C.

2. Material to produce Silicone heat-resistant paint

2.1. Film former

Like the paint systems in general, the film-forming agent in the paint has the basic property of good adhesion on the surface of the paint material, especially for the heat-resistant coating system, the film-forming agent must also be heat-resistant compounds.

Under the effect of temperature, after coating the surface and drying, the paint film is not affected by high temperatures, causing brittleness, breakage, loss of adhesion ability. Also, the film former should be resistant to agents such as water vapor, solvents, grease, and salts to chimneys and outdoor equipment that is weather-resistant.

In the preparation of silicon resin, containing groups - C6H5 - CH3 to easily dissolve in solvents.

Advantages of silicone resin:

- Low viscosity makes the manufacturing process easy

- High toughness and abrasion

- Good electrical insulation

- Heat resistance up to 500OC

- The color is clear, not yellowing over time

Silicone paint film has the advantage of high heat resistance but brittle, not high adhesion, so it is often denatured with other resins to enhance adhesion and toughness.

- Silicon resin is used as paint resistance to high temperatures up to 600-650OC, dried in drying mode, usually dried at 200 -300OC for about 30 minutes - 1 hour.

- Modified silicone resin mixed with alkyd resin can dry at room temperature, adhesion, more flexible but lower heat resistance.

2.2. Pigments, fillers

2.2.1 Pigments

Pigments are colored inorganic and organic compounds. In addition to high coverage, durable to common agents such as gasoline, water, weather, the powder must also be durable with high temperatures.

Therefore, pigments in heat-resistant paints are used: aluminum powder, zinc, black powder.

- With aluminum, paint film can be resistant to higher temperatures due to chemical reactions.

When high-temperature aluminum participates in a chemical reaction with - OH of Silicon, releasing H2, forming ... - O - Si - O - Al

- For zinc powder, it should be noted that: the melting point of zinc is 420OC.

- For black powder, the heat resistance is lower (black powder is a combination of black powder that has the composition of iron oxide, Mn oxide).

        + Fe2O3 content is about 58-60%

        + MnO content is about 38 - 40%

2.2.2. Fillers

The filler in the heat-resistant paint and improving the mechanical durability of the paint film while reducing the cost of the product also have a durable feature at high temperatures. Use the following fillers: Talc powder, BaSO4 powder, Mica powder (Silica M300).

Talc powder has the formula of 3 MgO.4SiO2.H2O

Mica powder has the formula Al2O3.SiO2

2.3. Additives

Applications of additives:

- Increase labor productivity as a wetting agent, dispersing into paint production, reducing mixing and grinding operation time.

- Prevent defects occurring during storage (anti-deposition, anti-film formation) that promote the drying process and improves the surface quality of the paint film (spreading agent, anti-foam, orange grain ...), increase stability for ultraviolet sunlight.

There are many different additives, each has a different feature and purpose.

In silicone heat-resistant paints, due to heavy pigments such as aluminum powder and dust, the deposition speed is very high during long-term storage. Redistributing these deposited pigments is time-consuming and the paint film will have "gritty particles'' if it is not stirred well before painting. One method to reduce deposition is to make the paint not gelatinized during storage, when used with mixing paint, they have the same viscosity as the original. Therefore, in Silicon heat-resistant paints, Tixogel is used for anti-deposition.

2.4. Solvent

Solvents are volatile liquids used to dissolve film former and change the viscosity of the paint. A good solvent must meet the following requirements: create a solution of suitable viscosity for storage and use, have the required evaporation rate and create a paint film with optimal properties, have an acceptable odor, has a low level of toxicity, and is affordable.

With chemical dry paints, solvents have the main role of creating a paint solution that can be painted according to the most appropriate method. For the physical dry film-forming agent, the solvent is more complicated because it affects the coating method's choice but is crucial for the dry film and coating properties. In these cases, often use a mixture of two or more solvents to achieve high-quality paint film. Usually, in addition to the real solvent, a diluent is also used, which is a liquid that by itself cannot dissolve the binder, but it can help with the dissolution of the real solvent.

Solvents have two important properties, solubility, which represents the solubility of a solvent with a particular resin, and the evaporation rate which is the relative rate at which it exits the film after painting.
