VIETNAM IS THE WORLD'S THIRD BIGGEST COUNTRY IN SUPPLY OF NATURAL RUBBER

According to the Vietnam Rubber Association, the total export value of the industry in 2021 including natural rubber, rubber products, and rubber wood reached 9.5 billion USD.

Among them, rubber products achieved the highest turnover with $3.7 billion, followed by natural rubber with nearly $3.3 billion and rubber wood products with $2.5 billion.

With the above figure, Vietnam is the third largest country in the world in terms of natural rubber supply. Sustainable rubber production is an opportunity for Vietnam to increase economic value as well as ensure compliance with strict environmental and social requirements in the production stages.

The Vietnam Rubber Association has proposed an Action Plan for the sustainable development of Vietnam's rubber industry, encouraging its members to soon build a Sustainable Development Program under suitable conditions. At the same time, the association cooperates with a number of organizations to support the development of guidelines for sustainable rubber production and management, minimizing environmental and social risks for Vietnamese investors in rubber plantations.

Besides, in order to improve the recognition and brand name of Vietnamese rubber products, the Vietnam Rubber Association has built and developed the certification mark "Vietnamese Rubber". There have been 82 products from 29 factories belonging to 17 enterprises licensed to use this trademark.

Vietnam Rubber Group (VRG) has also committed to sustainable development since the end of 2017. Up to now, the Group has 15 companies that have developed Sustainable Forest Management Plans to meet Circular No. 28/2018/TT-BNNPTNT regulating sustainable forest management; 12 members were granted certificates of sustainable forest management according to national and international standards over 90,000 hectares of rubber forests and were granted chain of custody certificates for 23 rubber latex processing factories.
The goal is that by the end of 2022, the group will have about 130,000 hectares with certificates of sustainable forest management, and at the same time, have 38 processing factories with certificates of chain of custody management and traceability.

In addition to VRG, stemming from the requirements of more and more consumers, some members of the Vietnam Rubber Association have implemented sustainable development plans according to international certificates. Especially, the association model of smallholder households implementing group certificates of Lien Anh Rubber Production Co., Ltd. is expected to be the first certified household group model in the rubber industry.
There are currently two sustainability certification systems in the world: PEFC (Forest Certification Program) and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). To achieve PEFC or FSC certification, rubber companies or rubber smallholders must meet very strict criteria in terms of environmental, social, and economic aspects.

Vietnam has developed a National Forest Certification System (VFCS). This system is currently recognized by PEFC. Up to now, Vietnam has about 97,300 hectares of rubber area certified VFCS. This entire area is owned by state rubber companies.

Statistics of the Vietnam Rubber Association show that Vietnam's rubber area in 2021 will reach nearly 939,000 hectares, of which the area of smallholder farmers accounts for about half. However, rubber smallholder so far has not achieved any certification.

According to Mr. To Xuan Phuc - A policy analyst at Forest Trends, the area of rubber certification for sustainability is still very limited because many rubber companies have not paid enough attention to rubber production. have certificates and currently only focus on export markets that do not require certifications such as China.

In order for rubber trees to continue to contribute to economic development, improve social conditions in rural areas, and enhance the role of environmental protection, Ms. Phan Tran Hong Van said that it is necessary to have supportive policies from the Government, the determination to implement the sustainable development program of enterprises and related organizations, helping the rubber industry to implement the criteria of certification systems on sustainable management and production.
