ZINC OXIDE AND APPLICATIONS TO THE RUBBER INDUSTRY

1. What is Zinc oxide (ZnO)

Zinc oxide with the formula ZnO is an inorganic compound, white in color and insoluble in water. Although found in nature, most of the ZnO used commercially is synthetic. Commonly used in skin irritations treatment and medical drugs. At present, it is used in many industries such as rubber, cosmetics, glass and ceramics, agriculture, and some other chemicals.

2. The application of zinc oxide to the rubber industry

Rubber products are the largest market for Zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is a compound widely used in the rubber industry due to the excellent properties it exhibits as an activator for the vulcanization of rubber.

Vulcanization is a chemical process that transforms natural rubber into a more durable material. Thus, Zinc oxide adds durability to rubber compounds and improves heat and abrasion-resistant ability, and helps protect against UV degradation.

Zinc oxide is very stable (durable) to heat. So it is mostly used to manufacture tires so that the tires are safe even at the high temperatures caused by the high speed of the tyres.

In addition, zinc oxide has high brightness and fine particle size so it is widely mixed with rubber products to make them appear whiter. The use of ZnO as a pigment appears in medical-surgical devices made of various rubbers, rubber sheets, and the sidewalls of tires.
