ALKYD PAINT: INTRODUCTION AND PROPERTIES

1. Introduction to Alkyd paint

Alkyd Paint is an oil-based paint. Alkyd paint is commonly used for products requiring high gloss and durability. Hence, it is the most suitable choice for furniture, kitchen cabinets, decorations, metals, and steel.

Alkyd paint has good adhesion, good gloss, good dust resistance, and impact resistance. 

2. Components

Alkyd paint is made of: resins, solvents, additives, drying agents, and pigments.

In Alkyd paints, the diluent is usually the chemical solvent.

3. Advantages

- Good adhesion, high durability

- Outstanding gloss and color durability. 

- Anti-mold, perfect anti-corrosion 

- Easy to use

4. Disadvantages 

The biggest disadvantage of Alkyd paint is that it is not environmentally friendly because the mixture of chemical solvents with compounds (VOC) causes symptoms of respiratory disorders and nausea.

When applying alkyd paint, users must wear a protective mask and ensure the space is well ventilated. Besides, Alkyd paint is difficult to clean. You must use a thinner or solvent to remove paint from the brush or rollers.

5. Applications

Alkyd paint is used: 

- For interior and exterior furniture

- For fence areas and balconies because it has very high impact resistance to damage. Therefore, many people use this paint

- For kitchen or bathroom furniture because of its anti-moisture

- For factories, mechanics, iron and steel, paints of ships' hulls, boats, etc
