1. What is a silane coupling agent?

Silane has a general chemical structure of RSi(OH)3, R organic functional group, attached to a polymer network (amino, epoxy. Acrylate or vinyl, etc.). Is a coupling agent among polymers and inorganic fillers by strong chemical bonds between the organic substrate and the filler surface, helping to increase the wettability in machining, and reduce the surface tension of the inorganic-organic surface for better dispersion.

Because of this special structure, the active silane coupling agent enhances the affinity between organic and inorganic compounds and enhances the physical and chemical properties of the composites such as strength, durability, electrical properties, water resistance, and corrosion resistance.

2. Used method

There are two commonly used methods of silane coupling agents: the direct mixing method and the pre-treatment method.

Direct mixing method: is a method where silane coupling agents, inorganic fillers, and rubber are mixed in a certain proportion. Then add other additives. So it will not prevent the silane coupling agent from coating the surface of the filler. Usually, silane coupling agents are added to 1-2% of the compound

Advantages:

- Dosage can be adjusted

- Simple process

Disadvantage: Dispersion efficiency is not satisfactory

Pre-treatment method: is to pre-treat the inorganic filler surface with the silane coupling agent using a high-speed stirrer, and then mix the surface-modified filler with rubber and other auxiliaries. Usually, a silane grafting agent is added to the filler amount. 1 ~ 2%

Advantages: Can add ingredients => high efficiency

Disadvantages: Requirement of machinery and equipment

3. Applications

Sulfur silicon coupling agents and silane coupling agents can improve the compatibility and strengthening effect between white carbon black and rubber. In addition, the Mooney viscosity, heat generation, and rolling resistance, rubber compound processing properties can be greatly reduced, and vulcanized rubber's wear resistance can be greatly improved by using this coupling agent

In tires, a silane coupling agent is an indispensable material. Especially in radial tires, silane coupling agents can also greatly improve the adhesion of the compound to steel wire.

Apart from tires, silane coupling agents are also used in some other carbon-free light-colored rubber products, such as sports shoe soles, rubber rollers, etc., which is also very important to improve the wear resistance of the product.
