1. What is Magnesium oxide?

Magnesium Oxide is an oxide compound of magnesium and belongs to the group of alkaline earth oxides with the chemical formula MgO. This chemical exists in solid form with white powder, odorless and soluble in water, acids, ammonia but insoluble in alcohol.

Magnesium Oxide is also known by different names such as Magnesium Oxide, Magnesia, Magnesium oxide.

Magnesium Oxide is widely used in many industries from ceramic production, building materials, heat-resistant furnaces to medicine.

2. Features of magnesium oxide

a. Physical properties of magnesium oxide

- MgO is a white, colorless chemical that is soluble in water as well as in acids, ammonia but insoluble in alcohol. The molar mass of MgO is 40.3044 g/mol.

- The density of MgO is 3.58 g/cm³. The melting point of MgO is 2,852 °C (3,125 K; 5.166 °F). The boiling point of MgO is 3,600 °C (3,870 K; 6.510 °F).

- The water solubility of MgO is 0.0086 g/100 mL (30 °C).

b. Chemical properties of magnesium oxide

Magnesium Oxide can react with Acids

2HCl + MgO ⟶ H2O + MgCl2.

H2SO4 + MgO ⟶ H2O + MgSO4.

2HNO3 + MgO ⟶ H2O + Mg(NO3)2.

Magnesium Oxide can interact with oxides:

Al2O3 + MgO ⟶ MgAl2O4.

P2O5 + 2MgO ⟶ Mg2P2O7.

2CaO + 2MgO + FeSi ⟶ Fe + 2Mg + Ca2SiO4.

Magnesium Oxide can react with water:

H2O + MgO ⟶ Mg(OH)2

3. Industrial applications of magnesium oxide

- MgO is the main ingredient in furnaces producing iron and steel, non-ferrous metals, glass or cement because it can withstand very high temperatures.
