Lac Dan Hy, Octoplastic’s Team Leader said: The idea comes from the fact that about 8 million tons of plastic waste are dumped into the sea every year. Particularly in Vietnam, annually 0.28 to 0.73 million tons of plastic waste are discharged into the ocean - accounting for 6% and ranked 4th worldwide - according to the UN Environment Program representative. “Plastic products today are very common because of their convenience and compactness.

However, their persistence has a heavy impact on the environment, especially the marine environment. The amount of waste from plastic, including PS plastic, is discharged into the sea, making the collection and treatment difficult, destroys the beauty of urban areas, and has negative impacts on marine ecosystems. Also, almost all plastic waste will be burned in the incinerator or buried without being classified, leading to an overload phenomenon.”

From that problem, five students from the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, Polytechnic University (National University of Ho Chi Minh City) came up with the idea of ​​turning plastic waste into useful materials such as unburnt tiles, light tiles.

According to Nguyen Le Nguyen Phuong, a member of the research team, the group's process of producing light tiles in the laboratory consists of 3 main stages: Washing, cutting, and crushing plastic waste; Add cement and water to PS seeds and mix well; Pour the mixture into the mold and dry or dry for 24 hours.

It is important to find the correct proportions of resin and cement when mixing. The group tried and failed more than 30 times over the course of several months. Not in the correct proportion, tiles will not be hard enough and be fragile. Through many times of trying, the team found the optimal formula.

Lac Dan Hy said that at present, the finished tiles of the group used 40-50% plastic, the rest is cement and other materials. The product is called lightweight tiles because the plastic material makes the brick lighter than usual. Tiles meet Vietnam's standard for concrete grade M50 (TCVN 1450: 2009) and have 90% insulation capacity, do not ignite under normal conditions, and have a sound insulation ability of about 60-70%.

After the product was invented, it was transferred to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Construction to test its bearing capacity and hardness.

The product is assessed to meet the Vietnamese standards and can be used in practice. Depending on the application, tiles will be shaped in different shapes such as square, round, hexagon. The proportion of resin mixed in tiles also changes accordingly. Tiles have the advantage of being light, cheap, durable, and recyclable.

The Octoplastic project is positively assessed by many experts for its practicality and scalability. The project also recently won the second prize in the contest "Creative ideas for a non-plastic ocean" organized by UNESCO.

Make use of fly ash and waste sludge

Dr. Le Thi Kim Phung - Department of Chemical Engineering, Ho Chi Minh University of Technology (National University of Ho Chi Minh City), lecturer instructing the research team - said that the project is fly ash and waste sludge. In the lab, the team combined the resin with fly ash or sludge instead of cement, forming an effective binder mixture.

In addition to lightweight bricks, the team is also building insulation and soundproof panels from plastic waste for many other applications. The project can be commercialized completely, but first standardization of raw materials is needed. Plastic waste should be collected and classified according to standards to have a clean input source for the making process ...

According to Dr. Le Anh Thang, a lecturer in the Faculty of Construction, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, its lifespan is quite long, up to several decades. Another advantage when the product degrades is completely recyclable. If the production problem is done well, the price will definitely be cheaper than the current bricks and tiles on the market. This product has many applications, especially when the waste classification at source in cities is starting. 

Ms. Nguyen Le Nguyen Phuong shared, currently the group has also conducted a survey in Hanoi about the potential to replace products in the market, about 86.7% of respondents said they wanted to use the product.

Fireproof tiles

In particular, with a simple production process, many households can also make light bricks by themselves to build small structures without complicated equipment. The team is ready to show you how to do it, providing the correct mix formula to use tiles in construction. Besides, factories can be put into production on an industrial scale with low labor costs because they do not require large resources.

According to the Institute of Building Materials, tiles from plastic have many advantages. This type of tile has a smooth and soft surface so when walking around, it does not sound like some other tiles. It is very safe for families with young children and the elderly, made of material that is fireproof and does not expand.

Plastic tiles are easy to clean, not moldy, good resistance to scratch and warp, good impact resistance, diverse designs and colors, and easy to construct. Besides, if you want to redecorate the house, you can easily remove the old tile layers to replace them with a new layer of tiles without too much cost.

Plastic tiles are now popularly used and popular in projects such as offices, restaurants, hotels, and houses. This type of tile is very durable, nice, and easy to install, so it is available everywhere from modern buildings to repairment for old apartments.
