STEARIC ACID AND ITS APPLICATION

1. Introduction

Stearic acid is a saturated fatty acid with an 18-carbon chain. Stearic acid is more abundant in animal fat than in vegetable fat.

Chemical formula: CH3(CH2)16COOH

Physical properties:

- Stearic acid exists as a solid in two forms: crystals and powder, and is white to slightly yellow in color.

- Molecular weight: 284.48 (g/mol).

- Commercial form: powder, granules, flakes, slabs, lumps

- In specific gravity: 0.9408

- Melting point: 69.6ºC, boiling point 291ºC (100mmHg)

Chemical properties:

- Solubility: soluble in ether, chloroform, benzene, CCl4, CS4, alcohol, and insoluble in water.

- This acid is flammable and non-toxic

Production of stearic acid:

- Produced by treating fats and vegetable fats with water at high pressure and above 200 degrees Celsius. The mixture is then distilled.

- It is also produced from starch through the hydrogenation of unsaturated fatty acids in vegetable oils, as well as mechanical synthesis via acetyl -CoA.

2. Application of stearic acid

Stearic acid is mainly used in the production of detergents, soaps, and cosmetics such as shampoos and shaving cream products.

  • Stearic acid can be used to make castings from a plaster piece mold or waste mold, and to make a mold from a shellacked clay original.

  • Stearic acid can be used as Lubricants, softening, and release agents In view of the soft texture of the sodium salt, which is the main component of soap, other salts are also useful for their lubricating properties.

  • Stearic acid is used in the manufacture or coating of zinc, magnesium, and other metals to reduce the oxidation of metals for better durability.

  • Stearic acid is present in diet sugars, or dietary oils, to limit weight gain.

  • Stearic acid is a common lubricant during injection molding and pressing of ceramic powders.

Currently, Mega Vietnam Chemical has been developing stearic acid products from Malaysia, Indonesia, China, etc in the domestic rubber market. With stable quality, reasonable price, and an experienced technical team in the rubber and plastic field, Mega believes to be your trustworthy partner!
