THE ROLE OF LIGHT STABILIZERS FOR PLASTIC - A SOLUTION TO EXTEND THE LIFETIME OF OUTDOOR PLASTIC PRODUCTS

THE ROLE OF LIGHT STABILIZERS FOR PLASTIC - A SOLUTION TO EXTEND THE LIFETIME OF OUTDOOR PLASTIC PRODUCTS

Plastic is one of the most widely used materials today thanks to its light weight, ease of processing and reasonable cost. However, with long-term exposure to sunlight, especially ultraviolet (UV) rays, many types of plastic will gradually age, fade, crack the surface and lose mechanical properties. To overcome this phenomenon, manufacturers often add light stabilizers (Light Stabilizer) to the plastic formula. This is an important additive group that helps extend product life, maintain color and protect the mechanical properties of materials in outdoor use conditions.

WHAT ARE LIGHT STABILIZERS?

Light stabilizers are a group of additives added to plastics to limit polymer degradation caused by UV rays and sunlight. When UV rays shine on the plastic surface, the energy of the radiation can break chemical bonds in the polymer chain, creating free radicals and activating photo-oxidation reactions.

Over time, this phenomenon leads to discoloration, loss of gloss, surface cracking, brittleness and reduced product life.

Photostabilizers help prevent or slow down these reactions through a variety of mechanisms, from absorbing UV rays to neutralizing free radicals formed during aging.

WHY DO UV RAYS DAMAGE PLASTIC?

Sunlight contains many different wavelength ranges, of which UV rays are the main cause of plastic aging. When polymers absorb UV energy, chemical bonds in molecular chains can break, reducing molecular mass and creating free radicals. These radicals continue to react with oxygen in the air, forming a chain of oxidation reactions that cause the material to increasingly degrade.

As a result, plastic products appear to have phenomena such as discoloration, loss of gloss, chalking, crow's feet cracking, reduced impact resistance and reduced tensile strength. For products used outdoors, without a suitable protective additive system, the lifespan can be significantly reduced.

POPULAR GROUPS OF LIGHT STABILIZERS

Currently, the plastic industry mainly uses two main groups of light stabilizers.

UV Absorber is responsible for absorbing the energy of ultraviolet rays and converting it into harmless heat before UV rays impact the polymer chain. This group is especially effective in products that require maintaining color and transparency such as polycarbonate sheets, plastic films or engineering plastics.

HALS (Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer) does not absorb UV rays but works by "capturing" free radicals generated during photooxidation. Thanks to its continuous regeneration mechanism, HALS often provides long-term protection and is especially suitable for plastic products used outdoors for long periods of time.

THE ROLE OF LIGHT STABILIZERS FOR PLASTIC

The addition of light stabilizers provides many important benefits.

First of all, additives help extend the life of plastic products when exposed to sunlight for many years. At the same time, the material retains its original color, limiting discoloration or yellowing.

In addition to aesthetic factors, light stabilizers also help maintain mechanical strength, limit cracking and reduce embrittlement. This is especially important for products that are load-bearing or frequently exposed to weather such as plastic pipes, pallets, containers, agricultural mulch, outdoor furniture and automotive components.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE IN LIGHTSTABILIZERS AND ANTIOXIDANTS?

These are two groups of additives that are often used at the same time but perform different functions.

Antioxidants mainly protect plastics during high-temperature processing such as injection molding, extrusion or film blowing, and also slow down thermal oxidation during use.

Meanwhile, concentrated light stabilizers protect the material against the effects of UV rays and sunlight. Therefore, to achieve optimal effectiveness, manufacturers often combine both antioxidants and light stabilizers in the same plastic formula, creating a comprehensive protective additive system.

APPLICATIONS OF LIGHT STABILIZERS

This group of additives is widely used in many fields such as greenhouse films, agricultural mulch films, HDPE pipes, PVC pipes, plastic pallets, trash cans, outdoor furniture, automotive components, electric cables, construction materials, industrial packaging and many other technical plastic products.

For products that must operate continuously under sunlight, choosing the right type of light stabilizer can directly determine the longevity and maintenance costs of the product.

LIGHT STABILIZED ADDITIVE SOLUTIONS AT MEGA VIETNAM

To meet the requirements of plastic protection in different usage conditions, Mega Vietnam provides many solutions Anti-aging and anti-UV additives.

One of the typical products of the new generation HALS (Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer) group is UV-783, UV-944 and UV-622, has the ability to resist long-term light aging, limit cracking, discoloration and deterioration of mechanical properties of many polymers such as PP, PE, TPO and materials used outdoors. The product also has good resistance to evaporation and extraction, helping to maintain protective effects for a long time.

In addition, Mega Vietnam also provides anti-oxidant additives to protect plastics during high temperature processing and slow down thermal oxidation throughout the product life cycle. When combined with light stabilizers, this additive system significantly increases the lifespan of plastics under harsh working conditions.

DEVELOPMENT TRENDS

Along with the development of the engineering plastics industry and the increasing requirements for outdoor durability, modern light stabilizer systems are being optimized to increase protection efficiency, reduce usage and be compatible with many different polymers. At the same time, combining HALS, UV absorbers and antioxidants in the same formula is becoming a popular trend to create plastic products with long life, stable color and outstanding weather resistance.

Light stabilizers play an indispensable role in protecting plastics from the effects of UV rays and photo-oxidation. Thanks to additive groups such as HALS and UV absorbers, plastic products can maintain color, mechanical strength and longevity even after long-term outdoor use. When combined with a suitable antioxidant additive system, this is an effective solution to help improve the quality and value of modern plastic products.
