The Pt/Co scale is standardized in test methods such as ASTM D1209 and ISO 6271. This system is designed to evaluate the yellowness level of clear liquids by comparing the test sample to a Platinum-Cobalt standard solution.
According to convention:
Pt/Co = 0: Completely colorless, transparent like pure water.
Pt/Co = 10 – 50: Very light yellow color.
Pt/Co = 50 – 100: Light yellow.
Pt/Co = 100 – 200: Clear yellow.
Pt/Co = 200 – 500: Dark yellow to amber yellow.
The lower the Pt/Co index, the better the color quality of the material is usually for applications requiring high transparency and aesthetics.
WHY IS PT/CO COLOR INDEX IMPORTANT FOR EPOXY RESINS?
Epoxy resin Widely used in:
- Epoxy floor paint.
- Anti-corrosion paint.
- Industrial glue.
- Glass fiber composite.
- Transparent casting (casting resin).
- Electricity - electronics and insulating materials.
The color of epoxy resin directly affects:
1. Product transparency
For epoxy used to pour resin wood tables, resin jewelry or cover transparent surfaces, a low Pt/Co index helps the product achieve high transparency and limit yellowing.
2. Ability to mix colors
The lighter the color of epoxy resin, the easier it is to mix with pigment or pigment. This is especially important in the production of industrial paints and decorative materials.
3. Evaluate purity
The color often reflects the degree of refinement of the raw material. If the color increases abnormally, the material may be oxidized, contaminated with impurities, or its quality may have decreased during storage.
4. Production quality control
Epoxy resin manufacturers often specify Pt/Co limits in technical standards to ensure stability between batches.
EXAMPLE COLOR ANALYSIS OF EPOXY RESIN
Catalog of epoxy resins Mega Vietnam's products include many lines of liquid epoxy resins, solid epoxy resins and epoxy solutions used in industrial paints, composites and technical adhesives.
Suppose a sample of liquid epoxy resin is tested according to ASTM D1209 and the results are:
|
Target |
Value |
|
Color |
Light yellow |
|
Pt/Co |
25 |
|
Viscosity |
According to product TDS |
This result shows:
- The sample has a very light color.
- High purity.
- Suitable for high quality paint production.
- Easy to color match.
- Can be used for applications requiring good aesthetics.
Conversely, if a batch of epoxy has a Pt/Co of about 180–200:
- Darker yellow color.
- May still be suitable for anti-corrosion paint or industrial adhesives.
- However, it is less suitable for transparent epoxy applications or art resin casting.
COLOR MEASUREMENT METHOD PT/CO
Theo ASTM D1209, the color of the liquid is determined by comparing the test sample with Platinum-Cobalt standard solutions of specified color value. Currently, measurements are often performed using an optical colorimeter or spectrophotometer to increase accuracy and reduce errors due to the observer's senses.
The final result is expressed as a single Pt/Co value, making it easy to compare between different epoxy resins.
WHAT PT/CO LEVELS ARE CONSIDERED GOOD FOR EPOXY RESINS?
There is not a fixed value for every application, but you can refer to:

20 – 50 |

For epoxy resins used for transparent pouring, high-end coating or cosmetic composites, users often prioritize lines with low Pt/Co to limit yellowing after use.
The Pt/Co color scale is an important standard for evaluating the yellowness level of epoxy resin and many other liquid chemicals. The lower the Pt/Co index, the brighter the color, the higher the purity and the better the applicability in products that require aesthetics. For epoxy resins used in industrial paints, composites, glues or transparent resin castings, controlling the Pt/Co ratio helps ensure stable quality and enhance the value of the final product.
