MBT can be called 2-mercaptobenzothiazole or benzothiazoline-2-thione.
Mercaptobenzothiazole
Properties
MBT exists has a yellowish powder form, bitter taste, and a typical odor. Commercial product types are different from each other in properties.
Application in rubber production
- It is used in sulfur vulcanization for rubber. Using MBT, rubber vulcanizes with less sulfur and at mild temperatures, both factors create a stronger product.
- The sodium salt is used as a biocide and preservative in adhesives (especially based on latex, starch, casein, and animal glues), paper, textiles.
- Soften natural rubber
When used as the main promoter, MBT adds a low elastic modulus vulcanized rubber product with good rubber aging resistance and good abrasion resistance. That is why it is preferred for the rubber mixing process.
MBT is suitable for mixing with guanidine, thiuram, dithiocarbamate, and especially amine aldehydes when used as an accelerator.
MBT promoter
Different from other rubber plasticizers that change vulcanized rubber’s properties, MBT plasticizes rubber without changing its properties. Because MBT is often the first one to be an added rolling rubber process, it can reduce the amount of plasticizer needed and help MBT disperse well in the rubber for better vulcanization and product quality.
